Village Green PO & Stores, Kingsland, Herefordshire

Jean Barbour had never owned a business before, but did not let that stand in her way when she took over The Village Green Stores, Post Office & Coffee Shop in Kingsland in 2000. Jean loves the combination of her two favourite things: cooking and being with people - a 'having your cake and eating it' situation!

Although never previously a retailer, Jean has a wealth of experience behind her, and a talent for making tasty, wholesome food. She prefers to source locally as much as possible, and the store stocks a high proportion of Herefordshire products, including wines, beers and fruit juices. Her delicatessen section tempts the villagers with a selection of local ham, eggs, bacon, cheeses, preserves and ice creams.

Customers can also take advantage of the coffee shop, and perhaps enjoy a homemade scone or the 'dish of the day' whilst deciding what to take home for the larder or the freezer! The coffee shop has become a real focal point for the village, particularly for the elderly, and Jean has instigated a Tuesday 'luncheon club', with senior citizens in mind, providing a set menu at a reasonable price.

Jean's energy and skills have preserved the village life of Kingsland, by providing a place where the local community can use the post office (next nearest PO is in Leominster), buy groceries and have a meal - all under one roof, with a friendly and efficient service.

Jean has benefited considerably from the support of an organisation called "WiRE" (Women in Rural Enterprise). She has attended a number of workshops, and particularly found meeting other small business owners to be most useful. WiRE is a dynamic networking and business members club, specifically helping women in rural areas start and maintain their own rural enterprises, including retail businesses.

Like the Rural Shops Alliance, there are plenty of training and networking opportunities, and members can also take advantage of a preferential rate loan from HSBC. The cost of membership is £25 per year. For further information about WiRE, contact 01952 815338, e-mail info@wireuk.org or visit their website www.wireuk.org
