Harpole Village Store - Northamptonshire

Dennis and Margaret Ellerbeck have owned and operated Harpole Village Store, Northamptonshire, since 1999.

In that time they have developed and upgraded the business in an effort to ensure its long-term viability. Immediate measures included upgrading the chiller cabinets and installing an EpoS system.

Further improvements have been made possible by a grant/support scheme operated by South Northants District Council. This scheme provides access to a local Retail Consultant and matchfunded grant aid (of up to £3,000) for village shopkeepers wishing to invest in their business for the benefit of the local community.

In the Ellerbeck's case, a 'Village Service Grant' was awarded in order to renovate the shop-front (including bigger windows and DDA-compliant doorway), block-paved ramp, new exterior awning and a new fridge to increase the shop's product range.

They also took advantage of the free retail advice on offer and decided to use the opportunity to alter the shop's layout. "The shop seems so much lighter and brighter now," said Margaret. "It's great for us and our customers too."

More recently the Council have incorporated help with crime reduction measures to the grant scheme and, acting on advice from Northamptonshire Police's Crime Prevention Design Officer, the Ellerbecks have had protective bollards inserted into the paving to the front of the shop.

Dennis commented: “Village shops are at the centre of a community and we are pleased to have had the support for these improvements because we want to do the best for the village
.

"They also took advantage of the free retail advice on offer and decided to use the opportunity to alter the shop's layout. "The shop seems so much lighter and brighter now," said Margaret. "It's great for us and our customers too."
