Gilmorton,
Leicestershire
In
spring 2003 the Leicestershire village of Gilmorton, near Lutterworth, was
due to lose its post office. However, one of the residents, Pauline Wilson,
was able to see the potential of a local disused building. She applied for
a grant from the Leicestershire Rural Partnership, and with additional financial
help from both the Countryside Agency and the Post Offices, Pauline was able
to afford the considerable but necessary renovation costs.
The
new post office also incorporates a well-stocked general store, offering a
significant range of goods and services, including an off license as well
as a wide choice of locally produced food. It certainly seems to be proving
a big success, not only in Gilmorton, but also in surrounding villages.
As a result of her efforts, Pauline has recently been recognized by the Post
Office, by winning the regional ‘Post Office of the Year’ award (innovation
category) – well deserved no doubt, and an example of what can be achieved
with imagination and commitment.
